Cover Letters
Your C.V. is only 50% per cent of your application; the other 50% per cent is your cover letter. A surprising number of people spend hours on their C.V then attach a standard, one line letter and expect to win an interview. You can do far better. The covering letter must compliment your C.V. and emphasise your match for the job in question. The most effective way of doing this is to highlight the significant requirements of the job in the advert.
Analyse each advert carefully and select four attributes that the candidate MUST have and one attribute likely to be on the employer’s WISH list. Complete this exercise even if the advert includes a list of required competencies, all candidates will use this, you must try and stand out among the crowd. Answer the questions:
"What are they really looking for? " "What do they really need?
Alongside each requirement you identify, list a personal achievement that shows your match to the job in question. Have a look at the following advert and see if you can identify five attributes on the hirer's list.
